Entebbe sits on a peninsula in Lake Victoria, 35 kilometers south of Kampala, and is home to Entebbe International Airport, the arrival and departure point for nearly every Uganda safari, and it is where you'll land if you're coming into the country. Most itineraries spend a first or last night here rather than pushing straight through Kampala's traffic, to allow for rest from a long flight or prepare and rest before one.

Why Entebbe

Choose a night in Entebbe over Kampala after or before a long-haul flight, because Kampala's traffic is highly unpredictable and can add two or more hours to a transfer that takes 10-15 minutes from an Entebbe hotel.

From our team

If you're going to have a safari longer than 5 days, let Entebbe be the place that allows you to rest, whether before or after the safari. You'll have a better experience if you're rested.

Planning Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Entebbe works as a stopover year-round, since its role is logistical rather than seasonal: every flight in or out of Uganda, and most safari starting points, routes through here regardless of season. You can travel here any time of the year.

How Long to Stay

One night before an early-morning flight or right after landing is common. A second night may suit you if you want to recover from jet lag or visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre(Zoo) before heading upcountry. There are other activities that can be accessed through Entebbe, like Golfing, a ride to the Mabamba swap for the shoebill stork, etc. and these all can affect how long you stay.

What It's Known For

Entebbe is known for its airport, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Uganda's national zoo, home to rescued animals including chimpanzees and a shoebill stork), and its Lake Victoria shoreline with botanical gardens dating to 1898. It also has a calm environment.

Major Attractions

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is the main stop for you if you have a free afternoon, before or after your safari. Entebbe Botanical Gardens along the lakeshore and a sunset boat ride on Lake Victoria are other common additions.

Don't Miss This

There's really no must-do here. However, a half-day visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre lets you see a shoebill stork, rescued chimpanzees, etc., up close before the safari itself even starts, without worrying if you'll see one.

Safety for Tourists

Entebbe is one of the calmest and safest towns in Uganda, and the airport area is well-policed given its role as the country's main international gateway. It is almost always monitored.

Accommodation to Expect

There's a whole range of properties to choose from, ranging from budget guesthouses to lakeside mid-range and upscale properties, with most within 10-15 minutes of the terminal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do most luxury safaris begin or end in Entebbe?

Entebbe is the gateway to Uganda. It houses the nation's only international airport and sits on a peninsula on Lake Victoria. Instead of dealing with the dense traffic of Kampala, luxury travelers stay in Entebbe to rest after long flights or to easily catch domestic bush flights out to the national parks the next morning.

What are the best luxury accommodations in Entebbe for couples?

For a world-class boutique experience, The Noer's Boutique Hotel, Hotel No.5, and The Latitude 0° (located nearby) offer exceptional privacy, fine dining, and spa amenities. If you prefer classic luxury right on the water, the Serena Lake Victoria Resort features a beautiful golf course, excellent security, and sweeping views of the lake.

How do we transit from Entebbe to remote parks like Bwindi or Murchison Falls?

Fly-in safaris are highly recommended. Rather than spending 8 to 10 hours on bumpy, unpaved roads, we can arrange private charters or scheduled luxury bush flights directly from Entebbe International Airport. This gets you to your luxury gorilla or savannah lodge in under an hour, depending on where the destination is.

Is Entebbe safe for walking around independently?

Yes, Entebbe is widely considered one of the safest towns in East Africa. The peninsula is highly secure, peaceful, and clean. While we always recommend utilizing the private driver we give you for evening outings, you can comfortably take daytime strolls through the historic Entebbe Botanical Gardens or enjoy a private lunch along the lakeside.

What exclusive day activities can we do in Entebbe before our safari starts?

We highly recommend exploring the Mabamba Swamp at sunrise in a wooden canoe to see the rare, prehistoric Shoebill Stork. For a deeper experience, you can book a private boat trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary for a behind-the-scenes encounter.

What medical and vaccine preparations do we need before arriving?

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate was mandatory for entry into Uganda, but is no longer required. Because Entebbe sits on Lake Victoria, malaria-carrying mosquitoes are present, so you should consult your travel physician for a malaria prophylactic (like Malarone).
