The leopard is the most elusive and secretive of Uganda's large felids, celebrated for its rosette-patterned coat, immense physical strength, and masterfully stealthy hunting tactics. As an incredibly adaptable apex predator, this solitary big cat thrives across a diverse range of Ugandan ecosystems. Leopards are famously known for their climbing ability, often hoisting heavy prey carcasses high into the branches of acacia or sausage trees to protect their meal from competing scavengers like hyenas and lions. Spotting one of these nocturnal predators resting on a thick branch or camouflaged in the golden thorn bushes is a true prize on any Ugandan game drive.

From Our Guides

Leopards in Murchison Falls favor the riverine woodland lining the Nile rather than the open Buligi plains, making them harder to spot here than lion or elephant. A guide who knows which sausage trees and fig trees a particular leopard favors for hoisting a kill gives the best chance at a sighting, usually in the cooler hours around dawn or dusk near the riverbank.

What Murchison Falls National Park Is Known For

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, named for the point where the Nile forces through a gorge roughly seven meters wide before dropping into Murchison Falls itself and the "Devil's Cauldron," creating a deafening roar and a permanent mist bow(looks like a rainbow). It holds the country's largest population of the rare, light-colored Rothschild’s (Nubian) giraffe, alongside elephants, buffalo, and lions on its northern savanna.

A secondary waterfall, Uhuru Falls, split off from the main cataract around the time of Uganda’s independence in 1962 ("uhuru" means freedom in Swahili).

Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park

The dry seasons, late December through February and June through September, keep park roads in better condition for game drives and give the clearest views from the Nile boat cruise. The wetter months still run both activities, with muddier tracks and lusher scenery along the riverbanks.

Leopard

Leopards are notoriously difficult to spot. Your chances increase if you go on a night game drive or a specialized predator-tracking excursion in Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Mburo National Park. My tip: On a game drive, always scan the horizontal limbs of large fig trees and sausage trees, especially near dry riverbeds. If you see an antelope looking intensely in one direction and sounding an alarm call, freeze and follow its gaze!

Murchison Falls National Park

You haven't truly experienced Murchison until you take the Nile boat cruise toward the Devil’s Cauldron. As you get close, the boat deck literally starts vibrating under your feet, the roar of the water drowns out the engine, and you see a permanent mist bow at the falls: pure adrenaline! My tip: always do the hike to the top of the falls at sunset. It is spectacular under the golden Ugandan sky. Wishing you a fun stay!
