Lake Mburo National Park

This antelope features a sandy-brown coat that darkens to a bluish-grey with age, often adorned with faint vertical white stripes on its flanks. Both sexes carry tightly spiraled, V-shaped horns, though the bull's grow noticeably thicker with age; males develop a prominent pendulous dewlap on their throats and a thick tuft of dark hair on their foreheads. Despite weighing up to 900 kilograms, elands are strong jumpers, capable of clearing an eight-foot fence from a standing position.

The eland is Africa's largest antelope.

From Our Guides

As Africa’s largest antelope, the Elands, massive, spiral-horned bovids travel in large, nomadic herds across the high ridges of the park. Despite their immense size, they are exceptionally skittish and maintain a significant flight distance from traditional motorized safari vehicles. The most effective way to observe them closely is via horseback tracking, which masks human presence and allows access to their remote grazing grounds.

What Lake Mburo National Park Is Known For

Lake Mburo National Park is the only Ugandan national park with zebras and impalas present in real numbers, alongside elands, topis, buffaloes, and over 350 recorded bird species around its wetland fringes.

Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park

The dry months of June through September and mid-December through February give the clearest game viewing, when animals cluster around the remaining water sources and the grass is short enough to spot zebra and eland from a distance. The dry season is also ideal for activities like cycling in the park and walking safaris.

The wet season (March-May, October-November) still allows a boat cruise and most game drives, just with thicker grass and muddy tracks.

Common Eland

Your best chance to photograph them is during early morning game drives along the Kanyaryeru Loop or near the Miriti Valley tracks in Lake Mburo National Park. You can also find them in the vast plains of Pian Upe Game Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park.

Lake Mburo National Park

I recommend booking a dedicated break here rather than treating the basin as a brief roadside stop on the way to the western gorilla forests. Lake Mburo National Park is a place where you learn about centuries of Ankole royal history and track savannah wildlife simultaneously. By skipping the traditional, closed-vehicle format, you will experience the wilderness from an entirely different physical perspective, and that gives a completely different feeling.
