Sporting a two-toned reddish-brown coat with a stark white underbelly, the impala features diagnostic black markings along its tail, ear tips, and thighs. Mature males bear lyre-shaped horns measuring up to 90 centimeters, while females remain completely hornless.

When alarmed, an entire herd can explode into a series of high, scattered leaps meant to confuse a predator about which animal to chase. They possess the capacity to leap up to 3 meters high and 10 meters long to evade predators.

Kampala, Uganda's capital, derives its name from these animals; British colonial administrators referred to the surrounding terrain as the "Hill of the Impala" (Akasozi k'Empeewo in Luganda).

From Our Guides

Lake Mburo serves as the exclusive habitat for the Impala, a jumping antelope within the entire geographic boundaries of Uganda. They live in large breeding herds dominated by a single territorial male, navigating the transition zones between open savannah and dense acacia woodland. Their high numbers mean you will encounter them continuously, often performing dramatic leaps when startled by passing vehicles.

What Lake Mburo National Park Is Known For

Lake Mburo National Park is the only Ugandan national park with zebras and impalas present in real numbers, alongside elands, topis, buffaloes, and over 350 recorded bird species around its wetland fringes.

Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park

The dry months of June through September and mid-December through February give the clearest game viewing, when animals cluster around the remaining water sources and the grass is short enough to spot zebra and eland from a distance. The dry season is also ideal for activities like cycling in the park and walking safaris.

The wet season (March-May, October-November) still allows a boat cruise and most game drives, just with thicker grass and muddy tracks.

In Uganda, wild populations are historically localized to a single primary destination: Lake Mburo National Park. For the best encounters, take the Zebra Track. Because Lake Mburo contains no elephants, it is safe to do a guided walking safari or cycling tour, allowing you to approach massive breeding herds on foot. You can also spot them inside the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and within the Pian Upe Game Reserve, where the Uganda Wildlife Authority executed a successful translocation project.

Lake Mburo National Park

I recommend booking a dedicated break here rather than treating the basin as a brief roadside stop on the way to the western gorilla forests. Lake Mburo National Park is a place where you learn about centuries of Ankole royal history and track savannah wildlife simultaneously. By skipping the traditional, closed-vehicle format, you will experience the wilderness from an entirely different physical perspective, and that gives a completely different feeling.
