The topi is a striking, medium-sized antelope renowned for its sleek, reddish-brown coat highlighted by distinct purplish-black patches on its face, upper legs, and hips. Built for exceptional speed, this highly social grazer is widely celebrated for its unique behavior of standing sentinel atop old termite mounds to scan the vast open savannahs for predators like lions and leopards. Topis exhibit fascinatingly fluid social structures, forming tight-knit resident herds or gathering in vast migratory aggregations. They are particularly famous for their competitive lek breeding systems, where males fiercely defend small territories to attract mates.
From Our Guides
The Topi, a fast, medium-sized antelope, is highly visible across the open grasslands, distinguished by its dark, iridescent purplish coat and yellowish legs. Dominant males regularly occupy the summits of old termite mounds to survey their territories and watch for incoming predators. They form large, migratory herds that shift fluidly between the dry ridges and the seasonal swamp fringes depending on grass availability.
- What Lake Mburo National Park Is Known For
Lake Mburo National Park is the only Ugandan national park with zebras and impalas present in real numbers, alongside elands, topis, buffaloes, and over 350 recorded bird species around its wetland fringes.
- Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park
The dry months of June through September and mid-December through February give the clearest game viewing, when animals cluster around the remaining water sources and the grass is short enough to spot zebra and eland from a distance. The dry season is also ideal for activities like cycling in the park and walking safaris.
The wet season (March-May, October-November) still allows a boat cruise and most game drives, just with thicker grass and muddy tracks.

Best Months to See Topi in Uganda
From our team
Topi
When driving through a park, always keep your eyes scanning the tops of large termite mounds. If you see a silhouette up there, it's almost always a topi acting as a lookout for the herd. They make for incredible, iconic Ugandan safari photos

Lake Mburo National Park
I recommend booking a dedicated break here rather than treating the basin as a brief roadside stop on the way to the western gorilla forests. Lake Mburo National Park is a place where you learn about centuries of Ankole royal history and track savannah wildlife simultaneously. By skipping the traditional, closed-vehicle format, you will experience the wilderness from an entirely different physical perspective, and that gives a completely different feeling.
