Ugandas größter Nationalpark, dessen Mittelpunkt der Nil bildet, der sich durch eine enge Schlucht zwängt und dabei die mächtigen Murchison-Wasserfälle bildet.
Warum Murchison-Falls-Nationalpark
Unlike other parks that force you to choose between dense primate jungles or dry savannas, Murchison delivers the best of both worlds, divided by the historic Victoria Nile. You can cruise past massive pods of hippos and giant Nile crocodiles to the base of the exploding falls, track rare Rothschild’s giraffes across the northern plains, and trek wild chimpanzees in the southern mahogany forests of Budongo: all on the very same trip. Tied together with the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for foot-tracking rhinos, it is the only circuit in Uganda where you can truly conquer the complete Big Five experience without spending days on grueling road trips.

You haven't truly experienced Murchison until you take the Nile boat cruise toward the Devil’s Cauldron. As you get close, the boat deck literally starts vibrating under your feet, the roar of the water drowns out the engine, and you see a permanent mist bow at the falls: pure adrenaline! My tip: always do the hike to the top of the falls at sunset. It is spectacular under the golden Ugandan sky. Wishing you a fun stay!

The dry seasons, late December through February and June through September, keep park roads in better condition for game drives and give the clearest views from the Nile boat cruise. The wetter months still run both activities, with muddier tracks and lusher scenery along the riverbanks.
- Wie lange soll man bleiben?
Two nights covers a boat cruise to the base of the falls, the Top of the Falls viewpoint, and one game drive; three nights adds a second game drive or a Budongo Forest chimp trek in the park's south. If you prefer a slower experience to soak it all in, 4 nights are perfect and allow you time to explore the rare stuff like searching for a shoebill stock, on the Albert Delta..
- Wofür es bekannt ist
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, named for the point where the Nile forces through a gorge roughly seven meters wide before dropping into Murchison Falls itself and the "Devil's Cauldron," creating a deafening roar and a permanent mist bow(looks like a rainbow). It holds the country's largest population of the rare, light-colored Rothschild’s (Nubian) giraffe, alongside elephants, buffalo, and lions on its northern savanna.
A secondary waterfall, Uhuru Falls, split off from the main cataract around the time of Uganda’s independence in 1962 ("uhuru" means freedom in Swahili).
- Wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeiten
A launch cruise to the base of the falls passes some of the Nile's densest hippo and crocodile concentrations.
If you take a separate downstream cruise toward the Lake Albert Delta, you get the park's best chance at spotting a shoebill stork. The Top of the Falls trail puts you standing above the gorge itself, and game drives on the northern bank track lion, elephant, and Rothschild's giraffe, etc.
- Das sollten Sie nicht verpassen
The downstream launch cruise toward the Lake Albert Delta is the single activity most likely to produce a shoebill stork sighting anywhere in the park. The sunset at the top of the falls is something you'll absolutely love too.
- Sicherheit für Touristen
Murchison Falls Park is surveilled 24/7 by trained staff under the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and it is completely safe. Life jackets are standard on boat cruises, and guides keep a set distance from hippo pods and nesting crocodiles along the riverbank. Game drives stay on marked tracks, with guides trained to keep a safe distance from elephant herds, which can be more defensive here than in smaller parks.
- Zu erwartende Unterkunft
Lodges sit on both the northern and southern banks of the Nile, spanning budget campsites, mid-range tented camps, and luxury lodges, with a short vehicle ferry connecting the two sides. There are a few fair options outside the park too.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Can I see the Big Five at Murchison Falls?
Four of the Big Five are present: lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, but the leopard population is still low, making them scarce. Rhino is absent from the park itself, though Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch, a stop on the drive north, has Uganda’s only tracked population.
Is the boat cruise at Murchison Falls worth doing?
Yes. The cruise to the base of the falls passes some of the Nile's densest hippo and crocodile concentrations, and a separate downstream cruise toward the Lake Albert Delta is the park's best chance at a shoebill stork.
How long is the drive from Kampala/Entebbe?
Expect a solid 5- to 6-hour drive from Kampala, or closer to 7 hours if you are coming straight from Entebbe International Airport. It’s a smooth tarmac ride for most of the way via Masindi. If you hate long drives, you can catch a quick 45-minute domestic flight straight to the Pakuba or Bugungu airstrips inside the park!
When is the absolute best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park?
The sweet spot is during the dry seasons: December to February and June to September. This is when the grass drops low and thousands of animals crowd the banks of the Nile for a drink, making them incredibly easy to spot.
How long is the Nile boat cruise?
The classic launch trip from the Paraa jetty up to the base of the falls takes about 2 to 3 hours round-trip. It is 17 kilometers of pure wildlife viewing each way.
Tip: Instead of a cruise back, you can disembark the boat near the base of the falls, and you hike up to the top of the cliff so you can watch the sunset!
